Volunteers...

The Dean Forest Railway is run by volunteers

If you would like to spend the occasional day helping out as a volunteer, why not check out our 'Support Us' pages to find out more.

There are roles for ladies, gents and even youngsters (under supervision). From track and signal repair, to fencing, painting, building, to loco, wagon and carriage restoration, to shop-keeping, catering, ticket selling and much more.

Suitable training is given, but often all you need is a little common sense and willing.

Why not find out some more. We'd love to hear from you!

Welcome to Dean Forest Railway

'The Friendly Forest Line'

The beautiful and historic Royal Forest of Dean offers many attractions to visitors. The Dean Forest Railway – based near Lydney in Gloucestershire – provides the sight, sounds and smells of travel on a rural branch line from a bygone era. A standard gauge heritage railway operated by steam trains – and the occasional heritage diesel or diesel railcar. The round trip is over 8 miles. Norchard Station has a free museum, gift shop and café.

As well as heritage train services for visitors to the Forest of Dean, the Railway runs special events suitable for all the family and some which will be of interest to Railway Enthusiasts.

'A dream come true - drive a steam loco!'

A visitor to our recent Day Out with Thomas wrote...

I am a local resident and on Friday 30th June I took my 3 1/2 year old daughter on the Thomas day. I just wanted to say what a fantastic time we had & that I was really impressed with the organisation and I thought it was real value for money in a world where so often days out cost a fortune for little reward.

Her favourite part was chasing the steam train
on Daisy. She loved being able to go on the carousel as much as she wanted and I thought the drawing/DVD room was an excellent idea as somewhere to do a quiet activity for a bit of time out on a busy day.  Well done all of you
and thankyou.  Mrs C.
